caring for wooden chopping boards

Do you own wooden chopping boards? They’re one of my favourite things in the kitchen, and when I walk into a kitchen shop Mrs. Spud groans as I try to justify fitting yet another plank of wood in the kitchen cupboards. I think they look great, feel nice and sturdy. They just feel right.

But what about caring for them? I was always aware that you should oil them, and I assumed you could use a vegetable or olive oil. Every few weeks (alright, probably less often than that) I smear a little oil all over. This prevents water getting in, and preserves the life of your board.

But I’ve been talking to the guys at Brandon Bespoke, and they don’t recommend using vegetable or olive oils. They say that they can turn rancid and eventually rot the board from the inside. You should be using food grade mineral oil.

I used their mineral oil and wax on a couple of my boards. They go on easily, and in just a minute you can coat your board. Wait a few minutes and buff off the excess and you’re good to go.

I then performed a similar process using their wax oil treatment.

I like how a wooden chopping board comes up when it’s been oiled: the deep shine and lustre afterwards makes it worthwhile. And of course, you’re prolonging the life of them as you do it.

I’ve made a video summarizing all this, and you can see me treat my chopping boards too.
